Our program takes your driving beyond the basics, helping you sharpen your skills and get more enjoyment out of the road.

For the duration of the course, you’ll be paired with one of our highly skilled National Observers—experienced Advanced Drivers who hold an additional Institute of the Motor Industry qualification.

Your Observer will meet you at a location convenient for both of you, allowing for a flexible and comfortable learning experience. Once assigned to your Local Group, you’ll be able to discuss the best place to meet—and you’ll complete the course driving in your own vehicle.

Throughout a series of observed drives, you’ll work closely with your National Observer to refine your on-road skills. You’ll learn to consistently apply the IPSGA framework (Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration) across various driving scenarios—whether navigating bends, motorways, or overtaking with precision.

To support your progress, we’ll provide a handbook to track your development, and you’ll have time between sessions to practise and perfect your newfound techniques.

You can also connect with your local Group, meeting fellow drivers to exchange insights and enhance your learning experience.

When you’re ready, your National Observer will recommend you for your Advanced Test with one of our Examiners. Upon successful completion, you’ll earn Advanced Driver status and become an IAM RoadSmart Member—a recognition of your enhanced driving expertise!
